Street of Harmony or more commonly known as Pitt Street is one of the four major streets in the original grid of George Town laid out by Captain Francis Light when he established his trading settlement. Historical buildings and landmarks located along Pitt Street make it one of the best tourism spot in Penang. The most fascinating feature about this place is the diversities place of worship for different religious groups in Malaysia. Landmarks like St. George’s Church, Masjid Kapitan Keling, Temple of Goddess of Mercy, Mahamariamman Temple and many more, show how Malaysians tolerate with each other religious practices and the ability for us with different believes to live peacefully with each other. In 2009, estimated 584,334 foreign tourists visited Penang made it one of the most popular tourist spot in Malaysia.

Problem Statement

The problem that we identified through our research regarding Pitt Street is the inconsistency of the signage system.

Certain landmarks like Masjid Kapitan Keling, Temple of the Goddess of Mercy and Khoo Kong Si have information boards with detailed descriptions about the landmark. On the other hand, some landmark such as the Mahamariamman Temple has no signage or information about it. Tourists were not able to gain information regarding it at all.

Even with information boards, the information boards are not strategically located. For example, the information board for Temple of Goddess of Mercy is being blocked by cars being parked or by garbage.

The design of those information boards is not effective with small typography and nothing iconic that tourists can relate with the landmarks.

Overall, signage system in Pitt Street is problematic and inconsistent which causes difficulty for tourists.

Objective

To improve the wayfinding system for Pitt Street.

The goal of a wayfinding system is to enhance the environment by guiding users to and from their destination of choice via an easy-to-understand, attractive guide or wayfinding system.

When properly developed, the core elements of a wayfinding system work together to assist users in:

1. Knowing where they are.

2. Identifying their destination and the best route

3. Recognizing their destination upon arrival

4. Safely returning to their point of origin

Concept

Design a series of consistent icons to be applied into the elements of the wayfinding system. By branding Pitt Street’s wayfinding system it will not only make it easier for tourists to find their way around Pitt Street, it can help people to relate those icons with the landmarks along Pitt Street.

The set of icons can be used as a form of trademark for Pitt Street.

This form of branding had been done in buildings like museum, gallery, university, train station and even cities.

Target Audience

People we targeted are foreign tourist who had never been to Pitt Street before. This group of tourist can be group into two categories:

1. Tourists that know where they want to go but didn’t know how to get there.

2. Tourists that roam around and wish to know the place that they arrived to.

Methodology

We collect our data through observation as our primary research. The type of observation we used are time allocation observation and unobtrusive observation. We went to the site on three different days at two different times. The day we choose is a Saturday, a public holiday and a weekday. The two different times are basically days and nights. We gained our data by observing foreign tourists regarding a few aspects:

1. Do they look confused when they are roaming around Pitt Street?

2. How often they asked around regarding the landmarks they visited?

3. How many of them are actually carrying a map?

We also did observation on the physical features of those landmarks. The data collected will be used to determine the design of the icon.

The illustration of the car take me about 3month to finish it(kind a lazy sometime, so do it very slowly and stop progress once a while)

This is the very 1st matte painting i made using photoshop. i am using a few images and manipulate it and recompose to create this scene.

Probably this is the subject that i am going to focus in my final year project.

Matte painting uses in film or movie which the scene is too expensive or impossible to be shot.

Traditional matte painters painted on glass, and photographed their work.

Now a day with the digital design software like photoshop, painter, all those scene can easily be created in computer.
